IMO WTF

imo wtf

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Pollution Prevention and Response sub-committee meets on Monday to kick shipping pollution into the long grass (again).

The IMO has a long list of pollution problems it can discuss (and solve).

There’s Heavy Fuel Oil – a fuel so toxic burning it on land is banned (but it’s still burned at sea). There’s oil spills, they’re on the increase. There’s plastic pellet and ‘nurdle’ spills, they’re on the increase too. And there’s ‘ghost’ fishing nets – left floating in the Ocean by careless industrial fishing vessels, yes they’re on the increase as well.

Basically all forms of Ocean pollution are on the increase and that’s because there’s insufficient regulation and policing at international level.

The IMO must step up and do its job, it must fulfil its environmental remit. And the IMO must start holding industry to account and stop listening to the greenwash of industry lobbyists and fake national representatives like Captain Ian Finley.

Ocean Rebellion demands:
The UN must form a new, transparent, and representative body to govern the Ocean for the benefit of ALL life. This new body must have the restoration and replenishment of the Ocean as its only measure of success. It should replace corporate power with people power. And it should represent the many forms of marine life who actually make the ocean a home.
