Today, reinsurance specialists Swiss Re employed the services of the notorious greenwashing specialists, the Dirty Scrubbers, to help hide the harm they are inflicting on the Golden Triangle, the global centre of marine biodiversity in the western Pacific Ocean.

The ladies, dressed to blend in with the task, swiftly set about removing the stains the reinsurance industry has inflicted on itself. They started by attempting to polish away the fact Swiss Re is enabling fossil fuel expansion, and finished by covering up the current (and plans for more) Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) extraction and processing plants which will destroy the pristine coral reefs.

The Coral Triangle is the global centre of marine biodiversity, sustaining millions of lives. While occupying just 1.5% of the world’s area, it supports 30% of global coral reefs, 75% of reef-building coral species (~600 species), 6 out of 7 global marine turtle species and over 2,000 species of reef fish. That’s a lot of biodiversity in a very small area.

All this is under threat.

Plans reinsured by Swiss Re (among others) to expand the extraction and processing of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will decimate this pristine marine environment. The death of marine life in the Coral Triangle will send shock waves of destruction which will ripple outwards devastating Ocean health across the globe.

And many local fishers and coastal communities rely on the biodiversity of the Coral Triangle for sustenance. The destruction of this marine environment will place over 360 million livelihoods at risk, causing starvation and waves of forced migration.

This doesn’t have to happen. If reinsurers like Swiss Re stopped backing insurers who insure fossil fuel extraction the Coral Triangle will be saved.

Surely Swiss Re can collect their premiums somewhere else? Is this money really worth putting the health of the Ocean at risk? After all every second breath we take is courtesy of the Ocean, isn’t being able to breathe more important than premiums?

“The insurance industry likes to present itself as a force for resilience, risk management and sustainability. But you can’t scrub away the risk of fossil gas expansion to coral reefs, fisheries, communities and the climate.” Adds Boycott Bloody Insurance.

“Some people say Liquid Natural Gas is bad, but, as long as we greenwash it properly, people won’t realise it’s actually worse than coal for Greenhouse Gas emissions. That’s because extracting, making and shipping LNG leaks methane, and methane is 80 times more climate warming than CO2. It’s a super-heater so the sea will be nice and warm and we won’t have to fly to Spain ever. We can go on lovely hot holidays in Scotland”. Shouts Vera (Dirty Scrubber).

The Coral Triangle is not for sale and fossil gas should not be insurable.

There are currently 19 operating LNG terminals and more than 27 additional terminals proposed, alongside more than 100 operating offshore oil and gas blocks and hundreds more exploration blocks.

Further fossil fuel development risks locking countries into decades of fossil fuel dependence while exposing some of the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems to additional industrial and climate pressures.
