⬆️ The van passes the UN International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London. The MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee) is meeting there this week to discuss greenhouse gas emissions. Sadly Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) isn’t included in these discussions even though it’s 80 times more climate warming than CO2 in the short term. Photo S. Staines.

On Friday, 24 April, a van playing a film showing Donald Trump and his climate advisor Scrubby the Sponge toured central London.
The tour highlights the negative impacts of LNG and Trumps love for the gas he is fracking and selling. Some news agencies even suggest he began his war with Iran to increase sales of US gas and oil – but surely the President of an important country like the USA wouldn’t do that? Especially when it helps the Russian dictator Putin.
The fate of the Ocean depends on us all.

The tour also happened a head of crucial negotiations at the UN IMO. In October Trump scuppered the IMO’s Net Zero Framework, an attempt to limit shipping pollution by introducing a carbon tax, by threatening small nations with export tariffs. His henchmen are back at the IMO this week to cause more mayhem on behalf of the shipping, gas and oil industry.

Unfortunately the UN IMO has left LNG out of its plans to regulate shipping, even though it is 33% more polluting than coal and 80 times more climate warming than oil.

Why is it so bad?
It’s so bad because LNG leaks methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, from its extraction to during its use. A fact the shipping industry and lobbyists like SEA LNG are successfully sponging away, lying to the UN IMO (and all of us).

The UN IMO must stop listening to the lies of the shipping, gas and oil industries.
It’s time for the UN IMO to crack down on rogue nations like the US, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Greece by calling out their misdeeds and threats – shipping pollution is increasing at an alarming rate, if the UN IMO doesn’t act on its remit now it’ll be too late.
