Mas n\u00e3o foi criada para bater recordes mundiais. 150 metros \u00e9 a largura das mand\u00edbulas de uma rede de arrasto de fundo, que na verdade pode ser ainda mais larga. T\u00e3o larga que dez jactos jumbo podem voar l\u00e1 dentro. Isto significa in\u00fameras tartarugas marinhas, golfinhos e peixes-pescadores sufocados pela gan\u00e2ncia da pesca industrial da UE (sob a prote\u00e7\u00e3o dos l\u00edderes da UE) e depois simplesmente atirados ao mar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pesca de arrasto pelo fundo \u00e9 um dos m\u00e9todos de pesca mais destrutivos, resultando na perda irrevers\u00edvel de ecossistemas e na liberta\u00e7\u00e3o de quantidades maci\u00e7as de carbono armazenado no fundo do mar. A sua proibi\u00e7\u00e3o evitaria 93% de todas as emiss\u00f5es de carbono da UE. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-71021-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devolu\u00e7\u00f5es de peixes e capturas acess\u00f3rias<\/a> (vida marinha que \u00e9 co-incidentemente capturada e devolvida ao mar morta ou moribunda ou vida marinha n\u00e3o-alvo que tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 devolvida ao mar morta ou moribunda). Os governos europeus gastam  <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.org\/study-bottom-trawling-in-european-waters-costs-society-up-to-eur11-billion-annually\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,3 mil milh\u00f5es de euros por ano para subsidiar esta cat\u00e1strofe<\/a>. Porque \u00e9 que os contribuintes da UE est\u00e3o a financiar uma ind\u00fastria que est\u00e1 a destruir as suas \u00e1guas costeiras? O oceano est\u00e1 de tal forma esgotado que as pequenas comunidades piscat\u00f3rias est\u00e3o no limite da sobreviv\u00eancia e as zonas anteriormente abundantes est\u00e3o agora vazias. Mais de 100 milh\u00f5es de pessoas dependem da pesca costeira de subsist\u00eancia e da pesca artesanal de pequena escala para a sua alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o e subsist\u00eancia di\u00e1rias - muitas vezes utilizando as mesmas \u00e1guas que s\u00e3o alvo dos arrast\u00f5es da UE. Acabar com a pesca industrial \u00e9, de facto, uma quest\u00e3o \u00f3bvia.
