Er zijn de laatste maanden 10 of meer cruiseschepen van de kusten van South Devon geweest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Colin Moore, een van de activisten: \"De meeste mensen hebben een nogal romantisch beeld van cruiseschepen, misschien gebaseerd op films als de Titanic. Maar moderne cruiseschepen zijn veel groter en de vervuiling die ze veroorzaken kan ernstige gevolgen hebben voor de gezondheid. Het is al erg genoeg dat iemands koolstofvoetafdruk tijdens een cruise minstens drie keer zo groot wordt, maar wat minder bekend is, is dat de uitlaatgassen van cruiseschepen erger zijn dan die van een hele stad\".<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>De cruiseschepen liggen in de baai geparkeerd vanwege coviduele beperkingen, waar ze een veilig anker vinden voor de heersende westenwinden. Hoewel er slechts een minimale bemanning aan boord is, hebben de schepen vaak al hun lichten aan en varen ze vaak van haven naar haven om hun afvalwater te lozen en de motoren in goede staat te houden. Gewoonlijk lozen zij hun afvalwater rechtstreeks in de oceaan, wat wettelijk is toegestaan buiten de territoriale wateren, ook al kan deze lozing bijdragen tot grote toxische algenbloei. Soms worden ze ook betrapt op het lozen binnen de 12-mijlszone, maar dan betalen ze kleine boetes. Ze lozen ook vaak afval en brandstof rechtstreeks in zee en slepen hun anker bij harde wind, wat ernstige schade kan toebrengen aan de zeebodem en de habitat. De Marella Explorer 2 - onderdeel van de vloot van TUI - verloor zijn anker in Torbay tijdens het extreme weer in januari en dit is sindsdien nog twee keer met andere schepen gebeurd. Dit wordt nu onderzocht.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>De deeltjesverontreiniging door de zware olie die door \u00e9\u00e9n cruiseschip als brandstof wordt gebruikt, is naar verluidt even groot als een miljoen auto's. Normaal gesproken wordt die olie op open zee geloosd, maar wanneer je tot tien van deze schepen in en rond een kustplaats als Torbay hebt, kan je verwachten dat de luchtkwaliteit verslechtert, vooral bij lichte wind aan land. Een van de grootste problemen is het stikstofoxidegehalte, dat in verband wordt gebracht met hogere percentages kanker en aandoeningen van de luchtwegen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Er is enige regelgeving van kracht en daarom gebruikt de cruise-industrie \"scrubbers\" of verbrandingsinstallaties om hun brandstof aan de normen te laten voldoen, maar vervolgens is gebleken dat zij het afval in de diepe oceaan dumpt, wat bijdraagt tot bredere problemen zoals verzuring van de oceaan. Onlangs heeft Ocean Rebellion ge\u00ebist dat de scheepvaartindustrie overschakelt op de schonere destillaatbrandstof.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Collega-activist en fotograaf Chris Dance zei: \"Als dit land en zelfs de wereld het serieus menen om de CO2-voetafdruk binnen veilige grenzen te houden, kunnen deze cruiseschepen het beste worden geschrapt.
