Leden van Ocean Rebellion hebben vandaag bij zonsopgang geprotesteerd in de haven van Falmouth. Ze droegen gasmaskers om de giftige dreiging van de voorgestelde herontwikkeling van Falmouth Docks te symboliseren. De actie komt slechts enkele dagen voordat de Cornwall Council op 25 september 2025 moet stemmen over het controversi\u00eble plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demonstranten zeggen dat het project - dat de sloop en bouw van een enorme nieuwe kade-infrastructuur en het baggeren van 850.000 ton vervuilde zeebodem omvat - een onaanvaardbaar risico vormt voor het milieu, de volksgezondheid en de lokale economie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De belangrijkste punten van zorg zijn:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Giftig sediment: Tientallen jaren van aangroeiwerende verfresten, waaronder tributyltin (TBT) en zware metalen, zouden worden verstoord en zich kunnen verspreiden over het estuarium van de Fal, wat een bedreiging vormt voor de oestervisserij en het zeeleven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Gevoelige habitats: Maerlbedden, zeegras en sponsgemeenschappen. Dit zijn zeldzame, langzaam groeiende habitats die beschermd worden door de Fal & Helford SAC <\/a>- onomkeerbare vernietiging tegemoet gaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Gevaarlijk afval: Volgens de eigen schattingen van de haven kunnen er 12.000 vrachtwagenritten nodig zijn om verontreinigd sediment te verwijderen, wat gevolgen heeft voor de luchtkwaliteit, het verkeer en de veiligheid in Falmouth en daarbuiten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Uitbreiding cruiseschepen: Hoewel het plan wordt gepromoot als een mogelijkheid voor drijvende offshore windenergie, zijn campagnevoerders van mening dat de echte drijfveer het verdiepen van de haven is voor veel grotere cruiseschepen - die aanzienlijke emissies en beperkte lokale economische voordelen met zich meebrengen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actievoerders wijzen ook op een ernstige procedurefout van de Marine Management Organisation (MMO). In haar oorspronkelijke raadplegingsbrief (18 juli 2025) verklaarde de MMO ten onrechte dat het project geen milieueffectrapportage (MER) was en dat er geen milieuverklaring was verstrekt. Dit werd pas op 29 augustus gecorrigeerd, nadat belanghebbenden zoals de gemeenteraad van Falmouth hun mening al hadden gegeven - mogelijk onder een verkeerde indruk van de omvang van het project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie Miller van Ocean Rebellion zei:
\"Dit project dreigt onze levende haven te veranderen in een giftige stortplaats. Het wordt verkocht als hernieuwbare infrastructuur, maar in werkelijkheid zet het de deur open voor steeds grotere cruiseschepen. De Cornwall Council mag dit project er niet doorwuiven zonder een goede afweging van de milieuschade.\"<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het protest benadrukt de groeiende lokale en nationale bezorgdheid in de aanloop naar de beslissing van de gemeenteraad. Actievoerders dringen er bij zowel de Cornwall Council als de Marinebeheerorganisatie<\/a> om het project stop te zetten totdat de milieu- en sociale gevolgen ervan naar behoren zijn aangepakt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocean Rebellion eist dat lokale en nationale overheden overleg plegen met bewoners voordat ze belastinggeld verspillen aan infrastructuurprojecten die schadelijk zijn voor het milieu.
