Het is een beetje een schok als je ontdekt dat het eigenlijk maar vijftig jaar oud is. Recente COVID-19 nachtmerries hebben de industrie weer in het vizier gebracht. Nu regeringen cruiseschepen in quarantaine plaatsen en passagiers aan boord aan hun lot worden overgelaten, staat het ongeregelde karakter van deze drijvende citadellen weer in de belangstelling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hier zijn drie niet-vervuilende feiten over de cruise-industrie die je tenen zullen doen krullen. En vergeet niet dat het gemiddelde cruiseschip per passagier tien keer zoveel vervuiling veroorzaakt als een vergelijkbare vlucht:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1) Op 1 februari 2020 testte een passagier van het cruiseschip Diamond Princess positief op Coronavirus. Dit was de eerste erkende uitbraak buiten de provincie Wuhan, China. Schepen zijn altijd kiemdragers geweest. De term quarantaine stamt uit de tijd van de Zwarte Dood, toen veertig schepen veertig dagen in een Italiaanse haven moesten blijven liggen. De laatste jaren zijn er in de sector uitbraken geweest van e-coli, norovirus, griep en zelfs waterpokken. Wie een cruise maakt, neemt een risico, een risico dat nooit in brochures wordt vermeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2) Een cruiseschip heeft de omvang van een kleine stad naar bevolkingsnormen. Het grootste schip vervoert 5.500 passagiers, maar er is geen wettelijke verplichting voor erkende artsen. Dit betekent dat passagiers hun leven in eigen handen nemen wanneer ze aan boord gaan. Dit wordt nog verergerd door het gebrek aan goede medische voorzieningen en niet geholpen door herhaaldelijk lobbyen om effectieve wetgeving tegen te houden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3) Aan goedkoop cruisen hangt een prijskaartje - cruises zijn alleen toegankelijk voor middeninkomens omdat de schepen onder een goedkope vlag varen. Een goedkope vlag betekent dat een cruiseschip overal ter wereld kan worden geregistreerd. Wat dit eigenlijk betekent is dat cruisemaatschappijen hun schepen registreren in landen met lage belastingen en geen arbeidswetgeving. E\u00e9n cruisemaatschappij, Carnival, ontdook vorig jaar belastingen ter waarde van $700 miljoen. Maar de menselijke kosten zijn erger. Veel werknemers van cruiseschepen leven in sardineachtige omstandigheden en krijgen slechts $2 per uur betaald.
