Maar het is niet gemaakt om wereldrecords te breken. 150 meter is de breedte van de kaken van een bodemtrawlnet, dat eigenlijk nog breder kan zijn. Zo breed dat er tien jumbojets in kunnen vliegen. Dit betekent dat talloze zeeschildpadden, dolfijnen en hengelaarsvissen stikken in de hebzucht van de industri\u00eble visserij in de EU (onder bescherming van de EU-leiders) en vervolgens gewoon overboord worden gegooid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bodemtrawlvisserij is een van de meest destructieve visserijmethoden, die leidt tot onomkeerbaar verlies van ecosystemen en het vrijkomen van enorme hoeveelheden koolstof die in de zeebodem zijn opgeslagen. Door het te verbieden zou 93% van alle EU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-71021-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teruggooi van vis en bijvangst<\/a> (zeeleven dat toevallig wordt gevangen en dood of stervend in zee wordt teruggegooid of zeeleven dat geen doelsoort is en ook dood of stervend overboord wordt gegooid). Foto door Jo\u00e3o Daniel Pereira.<\/em><br>-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het meest gestoorde aan de boomkorvisserij is dat het zonder subsidies, expliciet en impliciet, niet rendabel is. Europese regeringen geven  <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.org\/study-bottom-trawling-in-european-waters-costs-society-up-to-eur11-billion-annually\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,3 miljard euro per jaar om deze ramp te subsidi\u00ebren<\/a>. Waarom financieren de belastingbetalers in de EU een industrie die hun kustwateren vernietigt? De oceaan is zo uitgeput dat kleine vissersgemeenschappen op de rand van overleven staan en gebieden waar vroeger overvloed was, nu leeg zijn. Meer dan 100 miljoen mensen zijn afhankelijk van de kustvisserij en kleinschalige ambachtelijke visserij voor hun dagelijks voedsel en levensonderhoud - vaak in dezelfde wateren waar de EU trawlers op vissen. Het is echt een no-brainer om een einde te maken aan de industri\u00eble visserij. De EU, geleid door Frankrijk, kan beginnen met het echt beschermen van beschermde mariene gebieden en het verbieden van bodemsleepnetten voor de hele visserijvloot van de EU.
