Staines.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helaas zal de lelijke wreedheid van de industri\u00eble tonijnvisserij ontbreken op de agenda van de huidige <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluefoodinnovation.com\/venue\/\">Blue Food Innovatietop<\/a>. Fotocredit: Guy Reece.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De actie van Ocean Rebellion van vandaag valt ook samen met een ander belangrijk bluewashing evenement van de tonijnindustrie, de jaarlijkse <a href=\"https:\/\/tuna2023.infofish.org\/index.php\/conference%2020-22\">INFOFISH<\/a> conferentie die van 20 tot 22 mei 2024 wordt gehouden in Bangkok, Thailand. INFOFISH is de bijeenkomst van de mondiale tonijnindustrie, die bijeenkomt om hun jaarlijkse verdeling van 's werelds laatste tonijnpopulaties te plannen, vaak met de hulp van <a href=\"https:\/\/tuna2023.infofish.org\/index.php\/conference%2020-22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI, drones en andere hightech slachttechnologie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maar terug in Londen is de sc\u00e8ne buiten de Blue Food Innovation Summit de laatste in een reeks interventies van Ocean Rebellion. <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanrebellion.earth\/nl\/tesco-dont-be-john-west-tuna-chumps-stop-selling-industrially-caught-tuna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">het gebruik van dFAD's benadrukken<\/a> door de Spaanse en Franse tonijnindustrie, de belangrijkste leveranciers van tonijn aan de Thaise Unie. De zeemeermensen vertegenwoordigen de miljoenen tonnen 'onbedoeld' gevangen zeeleven die elk jaar verstrikt raken in dFADs. Dit zeeleven wordt 'bijvangst' genoemd, maar eigenlijk zou het genoemd moeten worden wat het eigenlijk is - walvissen, dolfijnen, haaien en schildpadden (en dat is de korte lijst).&nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rob Higgs van Ocean Rebellion zegt:<\/strong> <em>\"Samenzwerend met de Thaise Unie om tonijn te overbevissen, helpen Iceland, Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl en Aldi mee om deze geweldige soorten uit te roeien - samen met alle walvissen, dolfijnen, haaien en schildpadden die gevangen en gedood worden in industri\u00eble visnetten en dood terug gedumpt worden in de Indische Oceaan. Fotocredit: Guy Reece.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thai Union is 's werelds grootste tonijnverwerkingsbedrijf en maakte maar liefst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thaiunion.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-release\/1700\/thai-union-records-1q24-net-profit-of-thb-12-billion-as-demand-recovers-across-core-product-categories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">winst<\/a> van 124 miljoen pond in het eerste kwartaal van 2024, een winststijging die ten koste gaat van instortende populaties haaien, schildpadden, walvisachtigen en jonge geelvintonijn in de Indische Oceaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wat zijn dFAD's precies?<\/strong><br>Grote delen van de Oceaan zijn als uitgestrekte woestijnen, plaatsen waar de zon onophoudelijk op het water schijnt en er geen schaduw is. Af en toe drijft er in deze uitgestrekte woestijnen wat afval rond. Het kan een vlot zijn van dood plantenleven dat in zee is gespoeld, een omgevallen palmboom of zelfs een dode walvishaai. Dit puin drijft mee op de stromingen van de oceaan en daaronder gedijt het zeeleven - aangetrokken door de schaduw en de kleine zeedieren die er hun toevlucht zoeken. En deze zeedieren trekken roofdieren aan, eerst kleine vissen, dan tonijn, en met de tonijn komen haaien en dolfijnen. Ook bedreigde walvissen en schildpadden zoeken de schaduw op tijdens hun migratie. Deze kleine eilandjes zijn een oase in een 'oceaanwoestijn'. Kleine poelen van bloeiend leven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maar nu zijn veel van deze drijvende oases vallen. Vallen die zijn opgezet door een industri\u00eble visserijvloot uit de EU die buiten de EU vist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"supportus-block_efe785f4f96d9e33a1d0165d4543aa21\" class=\"block--supportus\">\n    \n    <p class=\"no-margin\">\n        <strong>Het lot van de oceaan hangt van ons allemaal af.<br \/>\r\nOnze interventies zijn afhankelijk van uw steun.<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n    \n    <div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-buttons\">\n\n        <div class=\"wp-block-button button--support\">\n            <a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"\/nl\/support-us\/\">Steun ons<\/a>\n        <\/div>\n\n        <div class=\"wp-block-button button--contact\">\n            <a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"\/nl\/about\/\">Contacteer ons<\/a>\n        <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Vissersboten maken hun eigen 'drijvend afval' met behulp van plastic afval dat ze kunnen vinden, zoals oude visnetten en boeien, pallets, plastic vaten - alles wat drijft. En in deze rommel plaatsen ze een satellietboei. Alles wordt dan overboord gegooid om in de oceaan te drijven en de vissersboten varen weg - om hun tijd af te wachten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De industri\u00eble vissersschepen wachten niet echt - elk schip is in feite een enorme tonijnvriezer en elk schip plaatst elk jaar ontelbare dFAD-eilanden van afval in de oceaan. Wat ze in werkelijkheid doen, is voortdurend in de oceaan patrouilleren met behulp van satellietvolgsystemen om de FADs te bezoeken die ze in het verleden hebben uitgezet - ze blijven op de loer liggen tot ze een gemeenschap van zeeleven onder zich hebben verzameld.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En wanneer de FAD een rijke en diverse gemeenschap van zeeleven heeft verzameld, wordt een groot net in de oceaan gegooid en voorzichtig diep onder en rond de FAD getrokken. Het net is als een beurs met een touwtje (het heet een purse seine net) en als het eenmaal op zijn plaats zit, wordt de bovenkant van de 'beurs' door een kraan strakgetrokken zodat alles onder de FAD wordt gevangen en geplet in een enorme uitpuilende beurs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De 'buidel' wordt aan boord gehaald en alle dode en stervende vangst wordt eruit gehaald om gesorteerd te worden. Het vissersschip is alleen ge\u00efnteresseerd in tonijn, maar al het andere wordt ook afgeslacht, de schildpadden, haaien, dolfijnen, alles. Fotocredit: Guy Reece.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tonijn in blik<\/strong><br>John West betrekt zijn haaien-, schildpadden- en walvisdodende tonijn in blik van Spaanse visserijen in de Indische Oceaan. Deze tonijn wordt door het moederconcern van John West, Thai Union, verkocht aan supermarkten als TESCO, Iceland, Morrisons, Asda, Lidl en Aldi voor hun huismerk tonijnproducten, die dit wrede product vervolgens doorgeven aan onschuldige klanten zoals jij en ik. Deze supermarkten blinken uit in hun dubbele standaarden, omdat ze weten dat Thai Union een vreselijke staat van dienst heeft - dat is overduidelijk. Thai Union, een in Bangkok gevestigd bedrijf, is eigenaar van een gigantische tonijnfabriek op de Seychellen die niet-duurzame drijvende FAD-gevangen tonijn verwerkt door <a href=\"https:\/\/seafood.media\/fis\/companies\/details.asp?l=e&amp;filterby=companies&amp;=&amp;country_id=&amp;page=1&amp;company_id=48097\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OPAGAC<\/a>de Spaanse organisatie van producenten van diepgevroren tonijn. In 2017 beloofde Thai Union in een gezamenlijke verklaring met Greenpeace dat het <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/7207\/thai-union-commits-to-more-sustainable-socially-responsible-seafood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>tegen 2020 haar bevoorrading met industri\u00eble tonijnvisserij die schadelijke drijvende FAD's gebruikt, halveren<\/em>.<\/a> Maar tot op heden is er nog steeds geen actie van betekenis ondernomen, Thai Union blijft tonijn afnemen van OPAGAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bridget Turgoose van Ocean Rebellion zegt: <\/strong><em>\"Keer op keer hebben Thai Union en John West hun beloften gebroken om deze gruwelijk wrede drijfslachthuizen te verminderen.  Als je er niet op kunt vertrouwen dat ze hun beloften nakomen, kun je dan wel vertrouwen op de tonijn in blik die ze je verkopen?
