Gevangen in netten van bodemtrawlers, lagen de \"Merpeople\", compleet met staarten en kronen gemaakt van zwerfvuil, dood en begraven op de stoep met de vlaggen van de EU wapperend achter zich aan.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Terwijl de zeemeermensen op sterven lagen heeft een coalitie van oceaan-NGO's een petitie met meer dan 150.000 handtekeningen overhandigd aan&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/act.wemove.eu\/campaigns\/bottom-trawling\">EU-ambtenaren.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>De Mer-people herinneren de EU-ministers van Milieu en de EU-commissaris, die vandaag bijeenkomen, er nadrukkelijk aan dat zij de vernietiging van de Oceaan en de overbevissing serieus moeten nemen. Zij helpen ons de verwondering over de oceaan uit onze kindertijd te herstellen en waarschuwen ons dat dit wonder spoedig verloren zal gaan. Ze vertellen de waarheid over wat er zal gebeuren als we niets doen en doorgaan met business-as-usual - er zal geen vis meer zijn in de zee.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"http:\/\/ocean-rebellion.onyx-sites.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07287.jpg\" alt=\"end overfishing end bottom trawling - ronja-bossen-dsc07287\" class=\"wp-image-375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oceanrebellion.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07287.jpg 800w, https:\/\/oceanrebellion.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07287-596x894.jpg 596w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Industri\u00eble vissersschepen stoten jaarlijks 159 miljoen ton CO2 uit. Dit komt overeen met de jaarlijkse hoeveelheid CO2 die door 40 kolencentrales wordt uitgestoten. Dit cijfer is sinds de ramingen van 1950 verviervoudigd, maar wordt niet meegerekend in de nationale CO2-cijfers. De industri\u00eble visserij profiteert van brandstofsubsidies van de overheid ter waarde van naar schatting US$7,7 miljard per jaar. Deze subsidies voor fossiele brandstoffen aan de bodemtrawlvisserij moeten worden omgebogen om een overgang naar een emissiearme en milieuvriendelijke visserij te ondersteunen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"callout-block_630e32e8752eb\" class=\"callout-heading\">\n    <span class=\"topline\">Industri\u00eble vissersvaartuigen laten los<\/span>    159 miljoen ton CO2 per jaar<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geschat wordt dat de bodemtrawlvisserij evenveel CO2 uitstoot als de wereldwijde luchtvaart.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>CO2 opgeslagen in de oceanen staat bekend als&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fclim.2021.710546\/full\">Blue Carbon.<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;Dit is koolstof die is opgeslagen in zeebodemsedimenten, mariene habitats en de daar gevangen vis. Wanneer de zeebodem wordt beschadigd door bodemsleepnetten, komt deze blauwe koolstof vrij, waardoor de zeebodem verandert van een koolstofput in een bron van CO2 en van methaan (CH4), een veel krachtiger broeikasgas. Blauwe koolstof wordt ook opgeslagen in zeedieren, dus vis die uit zee wordt gehaald draagt ook bij tot het vrijkomen van blauwe koolstof. Als dit cijfer zou worden meegenomen in de berekening van de koolstofvoetafdruk, zou de werkelijke voetafdruk van sommige met bodemtrawls gevangen zeevruchten waarschijnlijk nog groter zijn dan die van andere levensmiddelen, waaronder rundvlees. Dit alles draagt bij tot de verzuring van de oceanen, die op relatief korte termijn het mariene leven dreigt uit te roeien, vooral dat met skeletten of schelpen. Talloze mariene soorten worden nu met uitsterven bedreigd.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/ocean-rebellion.onyx-sites.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07330.jpg\" alt=\"end overfishing end bottom trawling - ronja-bossen-dsc07330\" class=\"wp-image-376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oceanrebellion.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07330.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/oceanrebellion.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07330-596x397.jpg 596w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Ocean Rebellion eist dat er NU een einde komt aan de boomkorvisserij. Samen met alle vroegere subsidies aan industri\u00eble vissers die worden gebruikt om visserij met een lage impact aan te moedigen, door overgangssteun aan industri\u00eble vissers en subsidi\u00ebring van de ambachtelijke (of traditionele kleine boot) visserij.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/ocean-rebellion.onyx-sites.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07385.jpg\" alt=\"end overfishing end bottom trawling - ronja-bossen-dsc07385\" class=\"wp-image-377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oceanrebellion.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07385.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/oceanrebellion.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/end-overfishing-end-bottom-trawling-ronja-bossen-dsc07385-596x397.jpg 596w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Sophie Miller van Ocean Rebellion zegt:<\/strong><br>\"Stel je voor hoeveel schade een net groter dan een jumbojet aanricht als het over de zeebodem sleept. Het vangt alles wat op zijn pad komt (wat dat ook moge zijn), vernietigt het zeeleven en laat de 'blauwe' koolstof die daar ligt opgeslagen vrij. Bodemtrawls stoten evenveel broeikasgassen uit als de luchtvaart. Dat zijn veel gassen.\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Clive Russell, ook van Ocean Rebellion, voegt daaraan toe:<\/strong><br>\"Vaak breken netten, en als dat gebeurt wordt het net losgesneden om over de oceaan te drijven en alles te doden wat verstrikt raakt. En als ze breken, staat de boot klaar met een ander om in de oceaan te werpen om het dodental voort te zetten.\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Rob Higgs, ook van Ocean Rebellion, zegt:<\/strong><br>\"De mensheid heeft de oorlog verklaard aan de vis en we zijn aan het winnen. De oceaan is zo uitgeput dat kleine vissersgemeenschappen op de rand van overleven staan en gebieden waar vroeger overvloed was, nu leeg zijn. Meer dan 100 miljoen mensen zijn voor hun dagelijks voedsel en levensonderhoud afhankelijk van de kustvisserij en kleinschalige ambachtelijke visserij - vaak in dezelfde wateren waar de bodemtrawlers op vissen. Het is een no-brainer om de visserij met bodemtrawls te verbieden, zowel om redenen van klimaatverandering als van natuurverval. Klimaatafbraak en natuurafbraak zijn in feite hetzelfde en beide moeten nu worden gestopt.\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Suzanne Stallard, ook van Ocean Rebellion, zegt:<\/strong><br>\"We eisen dat alle mariene instanties de waarheid vertellen over destructieve visserij en stoppen met het groenwassen van een smerige industrie met 'duurzaamheids'-leugens. We moeten wereldwijd een einde maken aan de bodemsleepnetvisserij, NU, samen met een rechtvaardige overgang voor ontheemde vissers.\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Roc Sandford, ook van Ocean Rebellion, zegt:<\/strong><br>\"De Oceaan kan zich snel herstellen, maar alleen als we nu stoppen met deze destructieve praktijk, binnen een paar jaar zullen deze kostbare ecosystemen zich herstellen en de vispopulaties stabiliseren.
