Op de eerste dag van de MEPC81 (81e Comit\u00e9 voor de bescherming van het mariene milieu) pantomime van de Internationale Maritieme Organisatie (IMO) van de VN werden de IMO afgevaardigden en lidstaten opgewacht door pantomime koeien uit de weilanden van de beroemde fokkers Lord en Lady Can'hardly. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

De koeien stormden buiten het IMO uit protest tegen de valse beschuldiging dat zij de enige oorzaak zijn van de toenemende methaanuitstoot. Ze werden tot actie aangezet nadat ze online de beschuldigingen van boze milieuactivisten over vloeibaar aardgas hadden gehoord. De overstap naar vloeibaar aardgas (LNG) door de scheepvaartindustrie drijft de methaanuitstoot over de hele wereld op en de IMO helpt daarbij - de koeien de schuld geven is volstrekt oneerlijk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord en Lady Can'hardly en landarbeiders voegden zich bij de koeien, ze zijn net zo van streek door de stinkende geruchten over methaan. De Right 'Onerable Lord hield een korte toespraak voor de afgevaardigden van de VN. Hij legde uit waarom de toename van het gebruik van vloeibaar aardgas (LNG) in de scheepvaart waanzin is, niet alleen zal het op korte termijn leiden tot meer uitstoot dan CO2, maar het zal ook leiden tot meer woede gericht op zijne Lordship en zijn kudde. \"Dit kan zo niet doorgaan,\" riep hij uit, \"of jullie stoppen nu met het gebruik van de fossiele brandstof LNG of ik besproei jullie smerige gebouw met koeienstront.\" \"Het is wat ze verdienen schat,\" voegde Lady Can'hardly eraan toe, \"per slot van rekening is het de IMO die naar de leugens van de lobbyisten van fossiele brandstoffen heeft geluisterd en hen heeft toegestaan om de feiten over methaanemissies onder de LNG-leugens te begraven. IMO, het is tijd om de fossiele brandstoffen achter je te laten!\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De koeien loeiden om de toespraak, maar het trieste feit blijft dat de IMO niets doet om te voorkomen dat LNG de fossiele brandstof bij uitstek wordt voor de scheepvaart. Alleen al in de Europese Unie is het verbruik van LNG door schepen verdubbeld van 2,2 miljoen ton (Mt) in 2018 naar 4,4 Mt in 2022. Het gebruik van LNG is gebaseerd op het misleidende idee dat het een alternatieve, schone brandstof is. Voorstanders van LNG doen aan gaslighting en misleiden de maritieme sector en ons allemaal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belazerende tactieken <\/strong>
Gaslighting is een vorm van psychologische manipulatie die wordt gebruikt om je te laten twijfelen aan je eigen waarnemingen en gezond verstand, vaak door feiten of de werkelijkheid te verdraaien. Voorstanders van LNG gebruiken gaslighting tactieken, zoals het financieren van onderzoek en het selectief citeren van onderzoeken die hun verhaal ondersteunen. terwijl onderzoekers die de risico's van LNG benadrukken in diskrediet worden gebracht<\/a>. Ze ondermijnen ook afwijkende meningen en opinieleiders door ze te bestempelen als \"paniekzaaiers\" of \"dwarsliggers\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vloeibaar aardgas (LNG) <\/strong>de feiten
<\/strong><\/a>LNG is een fossiele brandstof die bij winning, vervoer en verbranding als scheepsbrandstof methaan lekt in de atmosfeer - een gevaarlijk aardopwarmingsgas dat over 80 keer meer klimaatopwarming<\/a> op korte termijn dan kooldioxide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het Intergouvernementeel Panel inzake klimaatverandering van de VN (IPCC) ge\u00efdentificeerd<\/a> snelle vermindering van de methaanuitstoot als een van de topprioriteiten om de opwarming van de aarde zo dicht mogelijk bij 1,5\u00b0C te houden. Het IPCC laatste verslag<\/a> gericht op klimaatmitigatie maakt duidelijk dat fossiel gas in de vorm van LNG geen oplossing is voor het koolstofvrij maken van de scheepvaart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In tegenstelling tot wat de klimaatwetenschap voorschrijft, gaan scheepvaart- en havenbedrijven voluit de verkeerde kant op, zwaar investeren<\/a> in fossiel LNG, met als argument dat de brandstof hun milieueffecten en klimaatverontreiniging zal verminderen. Momenteel zijn er wereldwijd meer dan 785 nieuwe vrachtschepen in bestelling, waarvan er meer dan 400 worden gebouwd om op fossiel LNG te varen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het verbranden van meer fossiel LNG aan boord van schepen is een ramp in wording voor onze planeet. Het zou de methaanuitstoot van schepen, die al... roos<\/a> met 150% tussen 2012 en 2018, volgens de Internationale Maritieme Organisatie van de VN (IMO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Methaanemissies verminderen ook de luchtkwaliteit. Daarnaast leidt een grotere vraag naar LNG - ook in de maritieme sector - tot negatieve effecten op het land, zoals vervuild drinkwater, een lagere gewasproductie en een hoger percentage vroegtijdige sterfgevallen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huidige status van LNG en scheepvaart<\/strong>
Tussen 2012 en 2018 steeg de methaanuitstoot van schepen die op LNG varen met 150 procent. (Vierde IMO BKG-onderzoek 2020)<\/a>. De werkelijke methaanemissies van de scheepvaart geven ook aan dat de bijdrage van de sector aan de klimaatverandering groter is dan eerder werd geschat. Ondanks de negatieve klimaat- en milieueffecten wordt verwacht dat de scheepvaartsector de vraag naar LNG verder zal zien groeien, met de verwachte toevoeging van ongeveer 160 tot 500 nieuwe schepen op LNG per jaar tot 2030. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hebben strenge methaanregels nodig bij de IMO<\/strong>
Volgens de IPCC (AR6)<\/a>Om de klimaatcrisis en de verwoestende gevolgen ervan voor mensen aan te pakken, moet de methaanuitstoot op korte termijn dringend worden aangepakt. Voorstanders van LNG lichten beleidsmakers in over de werkelijke omvang van de gevolgen van LNG voor het klimaat en de gezondheid, terwijl ze een leefbare toekomst op deze planeet in gevaar brengen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Internationale Maritieme Organisatie (IMO) is het VN-orgaan dat de internationale scheepvaart reguleert. Momenteel bestaat er geen specifieke internationale regelgeving voor methaanemissies door schepen. <\/strong>Er zijn echter verschillende mogelijkheden om methaan volledig te integreren in het regelgevingskader van de IMO tijdens de komende 81e vergadering van het Comit\u00e9 voor de bescherming van het mariene milieu (MEPC81), die gepland staat van 18 tot 22 maart. Als dit niet gebeurt, stellen we een meer drastische toekomst voor de IMO voor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oproep tot actie bij de IMO<\/strong>
1\/ De richtlijnen voor levenscyclusanalyse (LCA) van de IMO:<\/strong> om ervoor te zorgen dat de werkelijke omvang van de methaanvoetafdruk van de sector wordt verantwoord, moet de standaardemissiefactor voor methaanslip 8,5% bedragen in plaats van de huidige 3,5% van de IMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2\/ Norm voor broeikasgasemissies als brandstof:<\/strong> methaan moet op een zinvolle manier worden opgenomen in de brandstofnorm voor broeikasgassen die bij de IMO wordt ontwikkeld als oplossing voor de middellange termijn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3\/ De IMO ongeschikt voor het doel verklaren<\/strong>
Als de IMO er niet in slaagt om LNG te reguleren, bewijst ze dat ze duidelijk niet geschikt is voor haar taak. De IMO handelt alleen namens de scheepvaartindustrie en houdt zelden rekening met het milieu. Voeg daarbij de voortdurende steun van de IMO aan de fossiele brandstofindustrie, door geen belasting te heffen op scheepsbrandstof en toe te staan dat het vuile bijproduct van fossiele brandstof, HFO, op zee wordt verbrand, plus het gebrek aan regulering van gevaarlijke petrochemische scheepvaart, en de lijst van wandaden en verkeerde richtingen van de IMO begint wel erg lang te worden. Is het gezien deze steeds langer wordende lijst niet tijd dat de milieutaak van de IMO wordt overgenomen door een andere, betere VN-organisatie? Het leven is te belangrijk om te worden verkwanseld door een onbekwame bureaucratie.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"De VN heeft mooie praatjes. De Internationale Maritieme Organisatie, een VN-orgaan, is niet geschikt voor haar taak. Het is gecorrumpeerd door de industrie en gebruikt zijn VN-mandaat voor de scheepvaartindustrie. We leven in een tijdperk van ecologische ineenstorting en de VN moet dit erkennen door het bestuur van de IMO te hervormen. We vragen de VN om de schurkenstaten, die nog schadelijker zijn voor het leven op aarde dan de schurkenstaten waar we zoveel over horen, aan de schandpaal te nagelen.\"<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
