Negli ultimi mesi sono transitate 10 o pi\u00f9 navi da crociera sulle coste del South Devon.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Colin Moore, uno degli attivisti, ha dichiarato: \"La maggior parte delle persone ha una visione piuttosto romantica delle navi da crociera, forse basata su film come il Titanic. Ma le moderne navi da crociera sono molto pi\u00f9 grandi e l'inquinamento che causano pu\u00f2 avere gravi conseguenze per la salute. \u00c8 gi\u00e0 abbastanza grave che l'impronta di carbonio di una persona aumenti di almeno tre volte durante una crociera, ma ci\u00f2 che \u00e8 meno noto \u00e8 che i fumi di queste navi sono peggiori dei gas di scarico di un'intera citt\u00e0\".<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Le navi da crociera sono parcheggiate nella baia a causa delle restrizioni covidiche, dove trovano un ancoraggio sicuro dai venti prevalenti da ovest. Anche se a bordo c'\u00e8 solo un equipaggio ridotto, le navi hanno spesso tutte le luci accese e si spostano spesso da un porto all'altro per sfogare gli scarichi e mantenere i motori in buone condizioni di funzionamento. Di solito smaltiscono le acque reflue direttamente nell'oceano, il che \u00e8 legale al di fuori delle acque territoriali, anche se tale smaltimento pu\u00f2 contribuire a grandi fioriture tossiche di alghe. A volte vengono sorpresi a smaltirli all'interno del limite delle 12 miglia, ma pagano piccole multe. Inoltre, spesso smaltiscono rifiuti e carburante direttamente in mare e trascinano l'ancora in caso di vento forte, il che pu\u00f2 causare gravi danni al fondale marino e all'habitat. La Marella Explorer 2 - parte della flotta TUI - ha perso l'ancora a Torbay durante le condizioni meteorologiche estreme di gennaio e da allora \u00e8 successo ad altre due navi. La questione \u00e8 ora oggetto di indagine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Si dice che l'inquinamento da particolato prodotto dal petrolio pesante utilizzato come carburante da una sola nave da crociera sia pari a quello di un milione di automobili. Questo viene normalmente smaltito in mare aperto, ma quando ci sono fino a dieci di queste navi all'interno e intorno a una popolazione costiera come Torbay, la qualit\u00e0 dell'aria pu\u00f2 peggiorare, soprattutto in presenza di venti leggeri a terra. Uno dei problemi maggiori \u00e8 rappresentato dai livelli di ossido di azoto, che \u00e8 stato collegato a tassi pi\u00f9 elevati di cancro e malattie respiratorie.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Esistono alcune normative e quindi l'industria crocieristica utilizza \"scrubber\" o inceneritori per far rientrare il carburante negli standard, ma poi si \u00e8 scoperto che scarica i rifiuti nelle profondit\u00e0 oceaniche contribuendo a problemi pi\u00f9 ampi come l'acidificazione degli oceani. Recentemente Ocean Rebellion ha chiesto che l'industria navale passi al carburante distillato, pi\u00f9 pulito.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Il collega attivista e fotografo Chris Dance ha dichiarato: \"Se questo Paese e il mondo intero sono seriamente intenzionati a mantenere l'impronta di CO2 entro limiti di sicurezza, queste navi da crociera dovrebbero essere demolite.
